В данном случае мы говорим только о прошлых привычках, поэтому глагол не может использоваться в настоящем времени. Иными словами, нельзя говорить «use to». Правила употребления требуют постановки глагола в Past Simple. Если же нужно сказать о привычках, которые существуют на данный момент, используйте Present Simple.

I used to eat bananas for breakfast. - Раньше я ел на завтрак бананы .

I usually eat bananas for breakfast. - Обычно я ем на завтрак бананы.

Обратите внимание: после частицы to всегда ставится инфинитив. Другие формы глагола здесь недопустимы.

My sister used to be a naughty child. - Моя сестра была непослушным ребенком .

Продолжим рассматривать правило. Used to употребляется не только в утвердительных предложениях. Мы можем смело построить отрицательное или вопросительное предложение.

В вопросе на первое место выносится did , за ним следуют подлежащее и use to. Прошедшее время берет на себя вспомогательный глагол, поэтому следует использовать начальную форму use to.

Did she use to wake up early when she went to school? - У нее была привычка вставать рано, когда она ходила в школу?

Did they use to spend vacation together? - Раньше они проводили вместе отпуск ?

В отрицательных предложениях к вспомогательному глаголу добавляется частица not, а use to также ставится в начальной форме.

I didn’t use to smoke when I was a schoolboy. - Я не курил , когда ходил в школу .

She didn’ t use to play golf. - Раньше она не играла в гольф.

Used to или would?

Когда речь идет о прежних привычках, иногда употребляют и другое выражение - would .

Kate would go to a swimming pool once a week. - Раньше Кейт ходила в бассейн раз в неделю .

Запомните важное правило: used to может указывать как на действие, так и на состояние.

Действие: My parents didn’ t use to go to a gym. - Мои родители раньше не ходили в спортивный зал.

Состояние: John didn"t use to love Rock music. - Когда-то Джон не любил рок-музыку.

Would указывает только на повторяющееся действие в прошлом. Оно не употребляется для описания состояния.

My friend used to go shopping every weekend. My friend would go shopping every weekend. - Раньше мой друг ходил за покупками каждые выходные.

Но нельзя сказать: John would love Rock music. В этом предложении следует использовать used to .

Would также может описывать действия, которые происходили время от времени (часто с элементом ностальгии). Хорошим переводом в этом случае является слово «бывало».

Разберем еще одно правило. Used to часто путают с to be used to. Однако они имеют абсолютно разные значения. Выражение to be used to означает «иметь привычку что-то делать», и ее можно заменить синонимической конструкцией to be accustomed to . Раньше человек так не поступал, но сейчас его образ жизни изменился.

He is used to getting up at 9 am. - Он привык вставать в 9 утра (раньше он так не делал).

Поскольку речь идет о привычке, которая есть у человека на данный момент, глагол to be логично ставить в настоящем времени. Для прошлых привычек используйте уже знакомое нам выражение used to/didn"t use to. Сравните:

Не забывайте ставить частицу to - не существует выражения used doing . Правило также требует использовать герундий, а не инфинитив.
